Manual for Pupils with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus

For multidisciplinary care and inclusion of children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus at schools and kindergartens

This Manual for pupils is part of a set of training materials created to support the inclusion and multidisciplinary care of children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus in schools and kindergartens.

Creating a manual for the children was a serious challenge. During the entire process, we were guided by our belief in line with the spirit of inclusive philosophy, namely that the students have an important place in the support team. With this manual and the illustrations in it, we aim to provide the children with the knowledge, skills and inspiration they need to fully participate in the multidisciplinary team.

The content focuses on the effects of spina bifida and hydrocephalus, which are discussed together with the common barriers which children face at school and kindergarten. Based on this, we also provide practical advice for overcoming barriers. The topics of people with disabilities, accessible environment, inclusive education and multidisciplinary care are also discussed in this manual. The entire manual is about the importance of encouraging the active participation of children as well as building skills for self-knowledge and independence.

The information provided in the Manual and the advice we give to children are all based on the results of international studies and reputable sources, referenced at the end of the document.

This manual uses language appropriate for school-age children, but it can be read by younger children as well. The illustrations are selected so as to match the discussed topics and be the starting point for further discussion between the adult and the child.
