Empowered youth for inclusive education: a young person with spina bifida raises his voice

Inclusive education lies at the heart of the Multi-IN project – an education system where every child and young person has the right to equal access, participation and support. In April 2025, this message was powerfully expressed through a video created by Petar Dimitrov, a young person with spina bifida and an active participant in youth initiatives supported by Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Bulgaria.

In his video, Petar speaks about accessible school environments as a fundamental condition for real inclusion. He emphasises that the right to education begins with the ability of every child to enter the school freely, move independently within it and fully participate in school life – alongside their peers and without barriers.

His message strongly reflects the Multi-IN approach, which views inclusive education not only as a policy objective, but as a process that requires partnership, dialogue and the empowerment of young people themselves. As a young person with spina bifida, Petar speaks not only from personal experience, but also advocates for the rights of all children and young people with disabilities to access quality and equitable education.

Empowering young people to speak up and defend their rights – and the rights of others – is a key element of sustainable inclusion. When youth voices are heard and taken seriously, inclusive education becomes a lived reality rather than a theoretical concept.
